The main concept behind smart dust is essentially an almost infinite amount of "eyes and ears" in whatever area it is spread it. It's beyond our means right now, but it's certainly not out of the realm of possibility.

that's frightening...truly frightening

I'm worried that we were both thinking the same thing at around the same time...  Also, Amish paradise was great.

Totally unrelated but dude. Just realized you sent me a PM the other night. I'll take a look at it in the morning when I'm not so filled with nanobots entering my brainspace.

I'm confused -- are our new overlords going to be nanites or aliens from KIC 846285 ?

Aliens with nanites

I have an issue with this guy attributing the Singularity to Vinge. It was actually conceived by John von Neumann.
Are you referencing a Neumann probe?

=Schlyder=

aha.. a Glock.   Thanks for the answer Art.

I have a Sig 550  hanging on the wall beside me.  :D

If only the erudite folks around here who smell their own farts could do that... sigh.
I hear ya. Let em sleep.

The lo-jack I have installed on my computer is blocking that picture of Art's gun

Had to look it up on my phone to make sure it wasn't porn lol

From an intelligence perspective it would make the job so much easier and so much harder. But countermeasures would be developed almost at parallel, so it's certainly not something I would lose sleep over.

RoseGirl

perhaps they are trying to brainwash us with all those 'minion' movies.

This dude is now a 3 on 10 on the Stephen Greer brag-o-meter.

He'd better watch out before I kick him up to a 4.

He also has a didactic delivery that I'm guessing he picked up from his German colleagues.  Nobody on earth sounds more smartass than a German academic.  Just wanna slap 'em.

Sort of and the same guy. Von Neumann conceived of both the von Neumann probe, which is applicable both technologically and nanotechnologically, but he also conceived that there would come a point where technological advancement would hit a singularity. We are almost certainly less than 50 years from the singularity due to the advent of superintelligence, either through a superintelligent computer or augmenting the human brain.

Things get interesting when you can make yourself smarter through technology.

Reported.  You're only supposed to post things you can view from an office cubicle.

But what if that cubicle is located at Mindgeek?

But wait. That was the Universal Scrotumizer. They'll take that won't they?

The first transhumans at work will be the CIA-on their own employees, to monitor their own employees.
