The Other Side of Midnight - Richard C. Hoagland - Live Chat Thread

It's part of why I once described Brandenburg (I think on my podcast) as "dangerous:" He has the veneer of real science, and he continuously makes references to having presented at scientific conferences which - to people who don't know about these conferences - seems to lend credibility. In reality, unless you say the moon is made of a giant insect egg, your abstract is going to get accepted.  (And brapps for anyone who gets that reference!)

Then you've got a (great?) Dr. Who episode filled with scientific falsehoods and logical holes!

Braaps.

Starts at 1 hour 21 minutes 25 seconds into the episode on my recording, which started just before the opening music and did not remove any bumper music.  Transcript lasts 1 minute 50 seconds.

JEB:  "Ive had one, one uh Mars blogger go after me."

RCH:  "Who?"

JEB:  "I challenged him-- This guy named Stuart Robbins."

RCH:  "Oh!  Yes!  [grunts/groans]"

JEB:  "Well I challenged him for-- to a debate--"

RCH:  [chair squeaks on floor]

JEB:  "He won't debate me."

RCH:  "He won't debate you?  Now that's interesting.  Because he has challenged uh Bara to a debate. [laughs]"

JEB:  "Well.  He should cha-- he, you know, I-- I'm-- I've challenged him to a debate, he won't debate me!"

RCH:  "Uh, does he say why?

[Either the stream loops, or they just repeated verbatim the last two sentences.]

JEB:  "Um. [pause] He-he-- he basically told a third party he felt he didn't have enough expertise."

RCH:  "Wait-wait-wait a minute.  He doesn't have enough expertise, but he can-- [during this time, JEB was talking over/under RCH, here's where JEB started to dominate]"

JEB:  "[reconstructed: he has enough expertise to criticize my work] but he doesn't have enough expertise to-- He's just a [unintelligible] troll."

RCH:  "Well yes, he is a troll.  You know-- is he--"

JEB:  [again, here's where JEB started to dominate over RCH since they were speaking at the same time] "and I so, anyway so, um--"

RCH:  "John, John, hang on.  Is this the same Stuart Robbins astronomer who is attached to the New Horizons mission in Boulder, at Southwest Research Institute?"

JEB:  "Oh, of course he is!"

RCH:  "That's the guy."

JEB:  "Yes!"

RCH:  "He mentioned me and Keith Laney in connection with our Pluto discussions the other morning.  Out of all the people in all the gin joints et cetera, [JEB laughs] for some reason he brings up us because we're discussing arcologies visible-- John, you gotta look at these Pluto images!  Everything we've seen at Cydonia that's in ruin, horrible ruin, is in such better condition at Pluto, and the images are not the highest res!"

I did not hear this live. My initial impression, solely from this transcript, is that someone is hoping that a casual listener will confuse astroguy with that mad martian stalker caller guy.

This seems like an alarming conclusion to reach, so I'm going to go back and restate my initial assumptions as a writing exercise right after I go to Congress and tell them that I need five hundred billion dollars in order to get to Mars in nine months.

muahahahahahahahhaaha.

I read this from 'About the show' on Hoagland's site.  I've been to the site sporadically over time but never dug too deep. Quite frankly because it looked like an 80's video game page to me.....It has cleaned up however.   Anyway....I found this to be refreshing in a sense.   ....Panel discussions will feature opposing points of view to discuss a wide variety of positions on science, humanity and government projects, while also venturing into comparisons of our own science fiction dreams and the reality of our human existence....   To me it gives Hoagland some leeway in what he talks about.

By no means am I an apologist BUT this gives me a feeling that he doesn't take what he says as gospel even though he preaches it and spins it.  I do not agree with his "science" but I wonder if the fantasy/science fiction aspect should be more in the spotlight.  I know he talks about "possibilities" but it always leads to him believing these possibilities are firm science when it is not.

Hopefully this makes sense to you guys and gals.   ;)  Can't wait to join the show tonight.  8)

CHEERS all!

Here we go again...not sure how many callers there can be. Kind of late for many of us. I hope stalker gets through or one of you makes some noise to spice it up. BRAAPS.

starrmtn001

Is this thread going to be the chat thread for tonight?

=Schlyder=

RCH has been eating his hat for the last 3 hours.  LOL  This gonna be good.

Guys, I used to HATE RCH when he was on C2C with Art back in the day. Thought he was a lame guest. I LOVE this show. WTH is wrong with me?

Morgus

Hoagland has open lines tonight and was listening to Art's show the past 3 hours.
Might continue the discussion from Art's show about the moon landings and conspiracies?
