Now that Security Essentials is defunct, what antivirus are you using?

I'm still running XP on a few of my machines (and plan to for the foreseeable future), and for some reason MS Security Essentials started crashing hard a couple of days ago.  I couldn't get it to stop crashing so I uninstalled it and learned, too late, that I couldn't even reinstall it anymore.   I'm very suspicious that MS did an update or something to get it to start failing on purpose.    But other xp machines I have don't have the problem, so who knows.   I suppose I'll find out soon enough if they update too.   I liked MS SE because it seemed to be pretty lightweight.

Anyway, so I went and found Avira, it comes recommended from at least one major benchmark test.  So far it seems to be not interfering with my computing experience, but I'm curious what you guys like to use, or plan to use when MS SE doesn't work for you.

Sorry MV, I know you talked about this on your show, but you didn't recommend anything.  Would have been a great call in question but I am never able to listen in live.   Maybe you can discuss it with that ginger slave of yours on the next spec sheet as well.

I get different advice on anti virus frm most everyone I talk with. It's frustrating for a non, tech like me. Vendors seem to lean towards kapersky  (sp). One tech I talk to says avast and iobit are bad another says they are good. He'll, if I know.

I use Kaspersky mostly.
I have one machine with Malwarebites. Seems to work ok.

Oh, I forgot to mention, hate 8. To hell with Keith I want to bomb Microsoft.

area51drone

I installed 8 on my dad's computer, I can't stand it either.  Unless I absolutely have to, I'm sticking with xp, worst case I will go to 7.   I still have some good vista licenses, and if I need an xp upgrade, I'll go to those first.

Avira is free, btw.  So far no nags.

Malwarebites works fine for me, but I don't do torrents or online games which may require a more aggressive antivirus program. I also run free AVG. Used to use McAfee because it came with my old laptop, but it was more trouble than it was worth and I uninstalled it.

Hit the window key and just type in what you are looking for.

Just hit the window key often.

I bought start8 from stardoc for 5 bucks. Kind of like the normal interface. Supposedly 8.1 gives the option as well. I'm copyrighting H8,8 And all variations... Go ahead mock me

They just did a new update for 8.1 as well, I just saw it in the news yesterday.   Supposedly it gives back the close X, and minimize buttons for apps at the top, along with some other stuff that makes it more like regular windows.  Might be worth an update for you.

Running with Kapersky based on techs rec.  No probs for a year and a half.

I'm using zone alarm, and evidently it has a built in anti virus. Seems to be working ok so far.

Defunct for XP.  You can't even install it anymore.

Not only that but it is now interefering with operations by tying up tremendous amounts of CPU usage and sending false alerts.  I have had to uninstall it resume regular operations and rely on McAfee.

Interesting!  So it wasn't just my computer all the sudden acting weird.  I think they purposefully bombed the software.   Shitty move.  Doesn't want to make me run out and buy a new OS, Microsoft.    On a couple of my other machines, it has done pop ups saying the computer is no longer protected, and always shows the red tent instead of the green one.   Losers.

Curious?  why is Security Essentials now defunct?  Still working for me no problems on Windows 7.  Just read further - didn't realize you were strictly speaking about XP - more like Microsoft Windows XP now defunct, not their antivirus software.

b_dubb

There was an update to SE that killed it in XP.  No doubt a NUDGE from MS to upgrade to another OS.  Buy another computer.  All that crap.

I uninstalled SE and installed Avast.  Confirmed the firewall was still working. Back in business.  I only use XP and Vista VM's so I can test sites in IE.

XP is running fine, it's their software that no longer runs on XP, hence their software is broken - on purpose.   It's a shitty move, no matter how you look at it.   Antivirus has nothing to do with providing KB updates.  There is no reason they can't scan executables and dlls just like they do on vista or greater.

Well, you've got 3 years for Vista and 6 more for 7:

Kate Upton makes my blood boil.  And flow into my penis.  Sorry.

Clam AV works pretty well for a scan of things, even scans your in box and files in your filed emails it will remove virus but on your files in email it will at least tell you the address to go after. PC Pitstop (PC Matic) has a feature that will block  any incoming beasty and Clam will also block things. Some updates get blocked with either sometimes and you have to disable them to get some updates. IoBit has a utility that almost helps keeping 'metro'  out of the way and is basically restoring the start button (sort of) but Metro is the dog you can't get housetrained and it continues to shit the carpet of my existence from time to time.Clam has two parts one that watches over things and one that hides waiting to be opened  for a full scan.

I've got a dreamcatcher I got at a truck stop in Eastern Oregon taped to the back of my monitor.  It filters out all the bad mojo and juju.  So far, so good.  It also has some purple feathers and a nice vanilla scent, so that's an added bonus.

No unfortunately, it amplifies them.  I've been receiving 3 per hour for the last 6 months.

Is this a good place to ask why you two old farts in particular don't like my posts? Because you two old farts particularly confuse me. You're both into the things I like--computers, and being a little bitch--and yet, we refuse to gel. Curious indeed.

Maybe it's because you're using hair gel instead of anal-ese.  Or is that a language?  I forget.
