I can't stop listening (OVER AND OVER) to the 5 minutes of the panic attack when Lear says that Rubin was abducted and bad things were probably done. Awfully great radio.

I've got a feeling I'm going to break my no Coast streak to listen to this debacle.
It is worth a listen, though not breaking a streak, that must be up to you. Cremo was good but, man, Lear was on a real roll. Jumping from amazing theory to other theories, conspiracies a-plenty, and bizarre tales. The callers were ok also (even Annie From Alabama got through and, amazingly, John Lear didn't respond to her. So there is someone more "out there" than Lear.) But the host, David Ruben, had "minor panic attacks", which Lear ignored basically at first, and then he "experienced an epiphany" due to statements Lear made about that "if you see a UFO you were in a UFO" and how "you don't want to remember it" "regression is regretion", etc . Bizarro world. But a fun show, for once.

Scully

'Tis true, all that's been said.  'Twas a bats in the belfry night after the first hour with Cremo, which I enjoyed.

I lingered on just to see how Ruben would handle the infamous Lear (JBW's April Fool's prank, as Morgus mentioned). As I recall, Ruben said that he (Ruben) has been a guest on Coast a couple of times in the past.  Guess that should have been fair warning.  ::)

Uncle Duke

I posted this earlier in the "John Lear" thread, didn't occur to me post my thoughts here about Ruben.  Anyone else have the feeling Ruben was playing Lear?

Finally got to listen to this show, it was a loon-a-thon to be sure.  Not only was Lear in rare form, but there was a trifecta of some of my favorite wackjob callers.... the free-energy woman from the deep South (Ann?), the angry black man who used to go after Ian, and the crazy old gal (Jan?).  If only the AAA from Hartford had called in!

Couple points I found interesting.  One woman questioned Lear's credibility, not because he's batshit crazy, but because he didn't tell her anything she didn't already know.  At the end of that call, Lear said something to the effect that what he was relating was "speculation" on his part. Really?  You mean he can't prove any of that stuff?

Secondly, I think the rent-a-host (Ruben?) was playing Lear.  After Lear told him if he had seen a UFO, then he'd been inside it, the guy kept interrupting Lear asking for details.  The funny part was the host acting like he was really shook by Lear's statement, and then jumping in with yet another emotionally distressed question just as Lear was getting on another roll.  He kind of did the same thing, but to lesser extent, when Lear mentioned the Mothmen.  This clearly was pissing Lear off.  At one point, you can hear Lear say something to the effect he was on the air to tell secrets, not answer the host's questions.  I think Lear asked if he was going to get to talk. That was classic.

Near the end of the show, I think I figured why Ruben was mocking Lear.  One of the last callers took great offense at Lear's anti-Israeli/Jewish bent, and Ruben gushed about how happy he was the caller got through to make his points.  Ruben then challenged Lear to respond to the caller, all he got was a curt, "I respect his opinion."  Don't know, but I "speculate" Ruben is Jewish (or of Jewish descent) and was fucking with Lear.

Yes, Uncle Duke, I admit I did and still do also have my doubts about whether or not Ruben was yanking Lear's chain.  It's quite possible he was.  Lear surely took the bait, if that's what it was.  He said several times at the end of the show how much he liked Ruben, and that he had been concerned about what kind of host he would be.  References, I imagine, to Wells ending that April 1, 2012 show with the implication that Lear's presentation was all just a joke.

Great drama for sure, but it didn't win Ruben many admirers among the listening audience.  Well ... not unless you count the parade of crazies who called in.  8)

Interesting theory, but sorry I don't buy it.  Ruben was weirdly emotional and melodramatic from the outset, even before Lear joined him.  He seemed more to me like someone who'd combined heavy worries about the future of humanity with too many anti-anxiety meds or something.  In any case, the whole debacle was curiously entertaining to listen to.

He was playing Lear. Lear wanted to basically spew a diarrhea stream monolog of unsupported crackpottery.  A favourite M.O. of these guys is to throw out so many "facts" that the listener cannot think about them critically because he's already moved onto the next BS tidbit.  So the fact that it goes unchallenged gives it a quasi sense of truth.  You'll see this tactic employed frequently on the Ancient Aliens tv show

Then when the host had the gall to interrupt Lear's monolog (1h30min on the youtube file) with some follow up questions lear gets pissy, says "do I get to talk? I need to get all my secrets out" and then basically tells Ruben how to do his job(attachment)

I think it's at that point he decides to teach Lear a lesson by out-crazying him with his Andy Kauffman level mind-f%!k/fake panic attack.  At that point the attention is drawn away from Lears kookoo laundry list to Ruben's breakdown . Brilliant comedy

Well one thing I'd agree with you on, Lear was a jackass to the guy.  Strangely though, at the end of the show, he did a 180 and actually gushed a couple times about what a great host Ruben was.  Surreal show.

This guy must be depressing as hell to be around.
Dreaming of killing his son?
Being butt violated by aliens who know John Lear?

Sad.

Nope, not Alan Colmes. It appears that Art himself was/is a client of David's!

As well as Lt. Barclay from Star Trek TNG...

This reminds me of the Gieco ad with Pinnochio leading a self-potential seminar.  The worst thing about these charlatans is the army of assertive losers they've created; able to be positive and smile while feeding you lies.

David was Vice President and Creative Director at Chancellor Broadcasting.

The Ruben - Lear bit was probably the funniest unintentionally funny thing I've heard in quite some time.

You could just see Ruben clutching at his heart, his tongue swelling up, his eyes bulging, and staggering around in circles hyperventilating as Lear nonchalantly told him he'd been abducted. Lear tries to continue on with his fascinating ramble into the clinically insane, but Ruben keeps pulling him back to the subject of the 'probable abduction' with a series of gasps, chokes, and zomgs.

5 stars.  Would listen again.

Haha, that does sound fun.  Perhaps one day people will have listening parties where they act out the dialogue.

Haha yeah just re-read this thread and recalled the epic strangeness of that night.  Without others here confirming the experience I might have thought I was lucid dreaming again.
