+1. Anyone can do a podcast these days, cameras are so good that you can make a feature art house film for 10 grand, youtube gives musicians an audience. Amazon will publish literally anyone's book. Even the screen writer's chances are getting better now that Amazon is buying scripts. The playing field has never been this level for creative people to get themselves out there. It's extraordinary.

"So I walked out to my car........and I clicked the clicker.....to unlock the car" "...are you there Art?".........
I know AB likes open lines, but I do not.
Would much rather hear an interview between 2 brilliant people.
If I wanna hear a yokel, I'll go to work.
Can't wait to hear Monday's guest.
I'm with you, but it's hard to get enough interesting guests, it's a break for Art and sometimes there's a fun call - even if it's totally fictional.

Has Art ever gotten a call from prison?

It was great listening to SIT from Art's birthday 20 years ago. Especially at the end. Ramona knew Art loved the "Midnight at the Oasis"
song. So she tracked down the female singer of the song, who turned out to be a big fan of Art's and had her sing "Happy Birthday" to Art! ;D

Now Art has "Midnight in the Desert."  Both the song and the show.   :)  It was great hearing Crystal Gayle on with Art.

I'm so glad Art has "The Chase" to start-off MiTD and "Midnight in the Desert" to close.

NOTHING negative about Midnight In The Desert, but Inca Dance will always be associated as the closer in my mind (I know... living too much in the past).

As a result the modern Arthur C. Clarke's and Robert Heinleins of the world had poor chances of making it through, whereas now they're getting attention on Amazon with works like Wool by Hugh Howey and The Martian by Andy Weir.
I downloaded Wool 1 for free on my kindle years ago, got hooked and bought the rest. Very smart marketing on Howey' part.  Excellent read.  Based on your recommendation, I'll try the Martian next.  It sounds familiar.  Is it going to be a movie?

Wow, wouldn't that be interesting. Don't know how the logistics would be for prisoners to call at will. But what a good idea, Open Lines for the incarcerated.   :D

Saw Art posted on facebook that the Time Traveler NEW sub was going up to $7.95/mo starting Aug 20th .. still at $5 for existing subs. Honestly it seems rather soon just a month after launch - with some bugs still to be worked out for the podcast aspect - but he did say they were 'working on' a mobile app . And also it's over a dollar more than the 'other show'. Yes Art is worth $10/mo more than Dave ... but thought it wasn't about the money? Hmmm.

One way to look at this is it's actually a good sign and the show is doing well.  It wouldn't normally be a good idea to raise the rate if subscriptions were lagging.

I believe there is also the concern if the subscriptions grow past a certain number, the charge for rights for the bumper music dramatically rise.  Maybe he's trying to keep a handle on that situation.

I really don't believe Art is all that hung-up on making money but I don't fault anyone, including Art, for making as much as they can, as long as it's legal.  Who am I to say how much someone should make?  More power to him.

Leykis is $20/month if you want no commercials...

You know, Jerry, I have to agree with you, from the nostalgic viewpoint.  I'm personally not all that crazy about Crystal's song but it makes Art happy so I'm down with it.

The big thrill for me is "The Chase."  I about fell over when Art started-up MiTD with the old opener.  Right on, dude!  Take it back, Art. ;D

"The Chase" just sounds so much better with Art playing it.  Yes, boys and girls, the thrill is NOT gone.

Maybe after Art's interview with Leykis on Friday Art thought he was practically giving it away at only $5? Or maybe they need more bucks to develop the mobile app and hire a body or two to take the load off of Keith?

It could be...or just supply/demand...price goes up with demand...which is a good thing! Means Art's new show is getting popular!

Yes, I think if it gets over 70,000 listeners they have to charge more as they are no longer small scale podcasters. I read somewhere they had 50,000 last week so getting awfully close.

Of course it's about the money, which is why folks here should not be encouraging paying more because they are just driving the price up for themselves and others who cannot afford it.  Pretty soon we'll see more pirating and more people sympathizing with them, I suspect.

If Art were in it for the fun of it, all financial information would be open to us, as would number of subscriptions, listenership numbers, etc.  The more these things are closed to us the more rumours will fly and the more any lame excuse can be given to us.

Except those who subscribed at $5.00 were locked in at that price. Keith said when he was on the gabcast the price was probably going to have to be raised. Art has been warning people for months the price was going to go up and to subscribe to get the locked in rate. If your too stupid to do that, then it's your fault. Plus $7 is going to break the bank.

Same here, every single night for any song is probably too much, the faster pace and lack of lyrics really helped The Chase and Inca Dance not get stale.  Maybe play Crystal's tune once a week?

Maybe, but of what use would that info be to them?

Maybe others were too stupid in not properly assessing their business model.  It would seem as though that's what happened for them to HAVE to raise the price so soon after the show began.  People can see the stupidity of this even if they are in on the ground floor.  Not all of us have the 'I'm in it for me, and others be damned' attitude because THAT would be truly stupid.

Of course, meaning they are ALL in it for the money.  That's the nature of things.  When it comes down to the bucks, they are nobodys's friends and their are no loyalties.

Besides, people still have 20 days to lock in the intro price of $5.

That's more than enough time to get signed up at this intro price.

When would data on ratings come out for the Portland radio market! Is it monthly?

Yep.  I'd like to know where such info comes from, as well.  I know nothing about the business and this board sometimes becomes rife with opinions and rumours with no substantiation at all.  Who needs disinformation when we have us, eh?  We can be our own worse enemies and in such an environment we must be aware that manipulation can be easy.

I listened to Crystal's song more than a few times on you tube.  The lyrics are great.  What I find most intriguing, however, is the fact the song is both calming and eerie at the same time.   The tone of the song reminds me of George Harrison's "While my guitar gently weeps" or the Verve's  "Bitter Sweet Symphony/"  I absolutely love Crystal's song, and the more I listen to it, the more it resonates with me.   The background noises and Native American undertones blow me away.   I think it captures the mood of Art's show perfectly (haunting, hopeful, and yearning for answers).  That is my humble opinion.
