I don't know, I got a relative who is a cardio-thoracic surgeon, but also used to have to do ER stuff, always jokes "look, basically I'm often just a plumber." It is axiomatic that the world is full of educated fools and derelicts.  Post grad education has its place especially in the hard sciences.  In the liberal arts and social sciences it's mainly a path for those who want to teach at the College level.  It's also a way to avoid honest work and become steeped in theory as opposed to practical experience in the real world.  That is exactly why the vast majority in this category are socialist/Marxist and useless outside of academia.
