Awaiting the Roku NetFlix Player

MV/Liberace!

Oh boy.  I'm what could be called "excited" about the imminent delivery of my Roku NetFlix player.  What does this thing do?  How does it work?

You sign up for the $8.99 NetFlix account which gets you one DVD shipped to your home per month.  Big deal.  However, there's more.  So much more.

This $8.99 package gets you unlimited streaming of over 12,000 NetFlix titles to your computer.  The Roku player is a small black box which hooks up to your internet connection, enabling you INSTEAD to stream these 12,000+ NetFlix videos to your tv.  Some of the videos are in HD, some arent.  One thing constant is that you will get AT LEAST DVD QUALITY all the time if your connection is fast enough.

On the Trainwreck radio show I've mentioned from time to time my desire to completely render the cable company irrelevant in my live with the exception of the bits they sell me over their Internet connection.  I've finally found my solution.  And when Roku marries together with Hulu within the next year?  Forget it.

As you were.

Ain't got no box - got a multi-media PC with a nice, large LCD screen - AND NetFlix.  Works like a charm.

Now, if I'd just move things around so I could use that spiffy monitor on my PC when working - and not jsut for entertainment!

holy shit, ev.  i just noticed that you've posted over 3,500 times.  were you paid for any of this?

in other news, it's been a few months now since i've acquired my roku box.  i love it.  it's been everything i'd hoped it would be, and sometimes more.  even better is the recent addition of roku's channel store which you can see by clicking here.  you guys can see where roku is headed, right?  they're positioning themselves to someday render your cable company's tv offerings obsolete.  it's everything we've hoped for in TV for the last 10 years, now coming to fruition.  this could become a revolution if roku manages to offer real, legitimate tv channels to people a la carte... something your cable company has never been willing to give you.  i just want to see cable companies (and then the cell companies) brought to their knees.  yes, i'm a communist.

i will now calm myself after all of this roku excitement by staring endlessly at the following picture:

No - you keep saying the check is in the mail.

Make sure you watch "Buttcrack".

I have had the Netflix/Roku thing for 6 months. Lots of really shitty movies, but it did lead me to the aforementioned movie.

i have to disagree with you on that, but that's the nature of something as subjective as what makes a movie good or bad.  yeah, there's some shit on there to be sure, but also a lot of great content that makes it worth the $9 per month to me.  and the new roku channel store is completely free.  all you need is the roku box.  however, i WILL call shit on the channel store.  lots of bullshit on there from technology websites.  the one that comes to mind most is leo laporte.  while i do listen to his podcasts, the show does not translate well in visual form because there's really nothing to look at.  it's just leo sitting in front of a microphone forcing himself to smile constantly (which annoys me quickly when done by ANYONE).

I do think these media devices are the way to go.  I have the Dish Network family package at $20 a month. I don't watch much on there except for Fox News.  I have even considered dropping that subscription.  I watch TV about 1 hour everyday.
Recently I bought the WD TV Live from Western Digital.  I download a lot of content from different places on the Net, and I need something better than a computer to watch on, so I bought this player which will connect to network shares.
I also have a Netflix subscription for $9 a month and for now using the S-video out on my video card to my TV works just fine.  Hopefully Western Digital will add Netflix compatibility, so I don't have to buy a Roku.  Having said that I have friends that are Roku owners and have never regretted their purchase.
Cable, and to a certain extent satellite, services are way over priced.  I doubt I will ever have a full programming subscription again.  Maybe just maybe for special occasions but that is it.

holy shit, slipstream.  this DOES look like the way to go.  now i will have a way to move all of that pirated content TO MY TV!!!!!!!!!!!!  i'm very excited here.  i must investigate this further.

by the way, slipstream...
if you're only subscribing to satellite for fox news, allow me to cock-block your satellite company by informing you that you can watch fox news streaming... for FREE... right here:

http://wwitv.com/portal.htm

i do it all the time.  just click "usa [a-l]" in the list to the left.  then scroll down and click "fox news" in the center.  don't bother yourself to click "fox news HD"... because it's just a repeating commercial with some faggot trying to sell you something.

Thank you so much for telling me about the Fox News streams.  I intend on calling Dish and canceling soon.
The sports stations are the biggest reason for the ever increasing prices of cable/sat.  I know several people that never watch sports, but they are saddled the costs of paying for someone else's sports viewing.  Now those of us that are not sports fans can throw off the chains of the cable/sat companies with our Rokus and WD TV Live media players.
Let me know if you should have any questions about the WD TV Live player.  I also am an owner of their earlier model, WD TV (no live), so I have a fair amount of experience.

Hey Mike, Glad to see you have a replacement website up! And Thanks for continuing the streaming of Art! I listen to it ever day on my Grace Internet Radio. Love it!

Oh yeah and the reason IM replying here is the Roku!--)))) I just Love it also! Got one of the first one's out and been beta testing every feature they have added!--))) Now I have 2 Roku's and a third on the way, so each TV in my house has one!

What do you think of the new channels added? IM looking forward to the rumored high profile channels to be added down the road and then DTV can kiss my ass! I can't wait to drop them. I been wanting Ala Carte programming for eons and looks like there's a good chance we will have that in the next year or 2!

Anyways, enjoy your Roku and Glad to see you back here!

PS Did ya ever sell the GNSucks site?

so do you mean you can hook multiple roku players up to a single netflix account?  or do you have to have separate netflix accounts for each player?

let's just say that the new channels are free, and i think they're free for a reason.  heh heh.  actually, some of the new channels are ok, but then some really blow mule shaft.

agreed.  i REALLY wish roku could start a hulu channel.  i don't think that's going to happen, though... especially if hulu goes behind a pay wall as is rumored to be happening next year.  if that DOES happen, hulu will become but a faint memory to me.  i will cease to care.

i never did sell the GNS site.  never found a buyer.  the only thing for sale is the georgenoorysucks.com doman name.  the content is all right here being used for coastgab.

glad to see you around again.  despite your number of posts, i DO in fact remember you from round 1.  hope you become a regular.

remember: when in doubt... post.

Oh *I* remember dabrain too.  I remember when he first got that avatar - and I was having a bit of a fruit fly issue - and kept trying to smack it . . .

How it works with Netflix is that you can have as many Roku boxes as disks that you subscribe to. I get 3 discs at a time so I can have up to 3 Roku's under my one account--)))

Recently I upped my DSL speed here to 7.1 MB which is good for my area. I have streamed both boxes in HDTV and surfed the web with no problem.

Yeah my favorite is Twit TV with Leo Laport and Mac Weekly. Give it time they just started out. As of right now the box we currently have can do  about 150 channels.

oops!  got it fixed for you.  you've gotta go in and manually add in those opening/closing quote tags if you plan to add more than just the one quote which automatically gets tagged for you by the system.

leo laporte was one of the channels i've taken a look at on roku.  i've been a leo listener for a long time, but i listen more for the hosts who appear on his podcast network than i do for him.  in particular, i tune in for windows weekly.  love paul thurrott.

well, for christmas my mommy and daddy bought me the western digital tv live.  it's everything i hoped it would be.  thanks for the recommendation, slipstream.

oh, and by the way... regarding my earlier recommendation of a site where you can watch fox news channel streaming, here's another fox news channel stream:
http://www.tvpc.com/Channel.php?ChannelID=1520
i find this to be of better audio/video quality than my earlier recommendation, and far more reliable.
let's see how long THIS lasts.  rupert murdoch would shit himself if he were to read this thread.

I am glad you are enjoying your WD TV Live.   It really is a great device.  Indeed, a major enhancement for all those downloads.

I called and canceled my Dish account last week.  They didn't give me a difficult time about it.  I just said that I don't watch TV anymore and the guy was like, "oooh okaaay".

Here is am my thoughts on this.

   a) I ain't not want no separate device what with to download movies to, I want to download them right to my PC's hard drive, and watch them on my PC.

   b) I am loth to have to pay yet another monthly fee to yet another online store, like NetFlix, especially when they ain't got more than a limited number of movies and TV shows digitized and downloadable at this point.

   c) Which leads to this final point, anyone got any notion how long it am gonna be till all movies, music, tv shows and porn is genital...er, digital...and ready for download? I don't think any of us can know, it could be years, and until then I feel I'll just be throwing money away joining a site that has maybe twenty percent of what I want to watch available for download.
