BBC News - MH17: Four charged with shooting down plane over Ukraine

If these guys had shot down an Israeli or Russian airliner, they'd be hunted down and killed.  What the Dutch are doing is mere theater, although a conviction, even in absentia, might give some degree of closure to the victims' loved ones

Dutch confronted pirates.  Authorities helped.  After the pirate ship was disarmed, the pirates were set... free.   ::).

Here's a Dutch sign:

Can't blame the Dutchies for letting them go, I'm sure they were only following the then current rules of engagement established by the EU.  They got tougher a year or two later, allowing the Brits and French to get very aggressive and effectively end the pirate threat off Somalia.

The Russians had a similar incident, but dealt with it quite differently.  They put the captured pirates back in the skiff, disabled their engine, and set them adrift with no food, water, or survival gear.  They were never seen again and almost certainly died a horrible death on the open ocean.

It could be apocryphal but I always heard that one of the various and sundry terrorist organizations took a Russian in Lebanon back in the day and the Russian really went after them, their family, and then no more kidnappings of Russian embassies etc. (Of course also, at least back then, there was lots of Russian involvement/support for various terrorist organizations in the region and I guess Russian would be considered a supporter of Hezbollah today.)

That story is true.  The Soviets mailed severed body parts (finger and ear, as I recall) of one of the children of the leaders of the faction who kidnapped the Soviet diplomats to him.  Never happened again.
