What about the mental health of the Chinese that are stationed there?  Perhaps they can Skype with the Chinese version of Dr. Phil and get the help they need.

My Uncle Vern worked for Packard.   During the war they sent him to a little reef/atoll place like that and he stayed there
for three straight years, overhauling PT Boat engines or whatever.

My Dad said he was never quite right in the head after that...............

My granddad was stationed in Ulithi, some small atoll turned into a yuuge floating Naval base, anchorage greater than Pearl, during WWII and seemed to have turned out ok.

Geez, as Norry would say. And some quick internet sleuthing tells me that Lorne Greene was a "Joo" named Hyman* not a western cattle baron, Glen Larson was a Mormon, and "Battlestar" was Mormon plot, And, worse, Alpo is not a great dog food. Mind blown.  ;)

China warns parents after boy filmed peeing in lift
QuoteChinese state media are using a video of a child urinating in a lift to reinforce better parental controls.

The Ministry of Public Security has shared footage on the popular Sina Weibo microblog from 23 February of an elevator in a building in southwest Chongqing.

"Please educate, and take good care of your children!" it says.

The footage shows a boy urinating over the buttons that take passengers to different floors. His actions caused the lift to short circuit, and then he appears visibly distressed as the lights go on and off, and the doors open and close.

Official newspaper People's Daily says that the unnamed boy was subsequently rescued.

Beijing News says that the boy's father disputes the video's authenticity. "He [the father] says that his son cannot yet urinate that high, he doesn't believe it, and his son won't admit it, says he didn't do it," a reporter tells the paper.
He denies it so he can try to save face and not look like a crappy parent.

"Chinese funny people; when say “go,” mean “go.” (Charlie Chan in Docks of New Orleans)

I liked this end quote:
" Others say that it is "admirable" that he is able to urinate "so high"."

Interesting thread, guys. You might like this Youtube channel - ADVChina. Two expats, one from South Africa and the other from the USA, travel around different areas on motorcycles and talk about Chinese society and culture.

Thanks. Interesting. Years ago I worked for a Chinese company (ROC) but also at the time was transitioning lots of the labor intensive factories to the mainland. It was very interesting. First thing was nothing was very direct, which was odd for an American. There was no "ownership" of a problem and an odd deal that is hard to explain except the stereotypical "face" concept. An example if a manager hired someone and they didn't perform well this looks bad on the manager and calls his judgment into question- so the incentive was to 'cover' for the employee until he could be reassigned, for some reason, versus firing (which they were wont to do) or calling direct attention to the problem. They also did not like legalities, firm contracts, etc but relied more on trust and long-term relationships with suppliers, freight-forwarders, banks, shippers, etc. It took a long time to get something "firm" on paper and lots of lack of transparency from the Asian sides of the business compared to the US and European side. I'm not claiming actual cheating but, one never knows. But rather used trusted sources than make quick deals- even if the new companies might offer better rates or service. Also, this was years ago, but also more risk adverse in decision making. Personally and for the business. I was told, for example, that for kids there were certain tests you had to take and if you failed- that's it. Same in business, if you made a really bad decision you weren't fired- but there goes your upward mobility. This was long ago and I think changing. But it wasn't like the American expect some failures on the way to success etc.

A good example, I had a secretary in Taipei that I would send information to and she would distribute it there to proper channels. Well, I kept screwing something up and she would make the corrections for me. I would look at the spreadsheets and see the changes and then realize my mistake and thank her. No reply. This kept happening and I really wanted to figure out what I was doing wrong- rather than have her correct it each time. Exacerbated I asked some other people about this problem and was told that "I was really embarrassing her" because I was being so direct and also the admission that I, her boss, didn't know something she did. The American in me was like: admit the problem, figure out a solution, learn from it, and move on- no big deal. The Asian was like: we all know there is a problem but don't explicitly admit it, find a solution but that allows no admission of the problem or shame on anybody and won't reflect bad on the person who hired you or your boss.

That would be fun in an earthquake or just with some bad weather. Good article showing the Chinese frequent claim are, basically, bs.

"The implied superiority of such a long history begets a dangerous sense of entitlement. And it’s just plain silly. Imagine if we applied the logic of “old civilizations deserve special treatment” to Egypt and the modern Mesopotamian nations of Iraq and Iran, places that actually do have five thousand years of history. Imagine executives explaining, “Our joint venture in Cairo is losing money but we have to be patient â€" they built the pyramids four-and-a-half-thousand years ago.” Or picture political commentators urging caution along the lines of: “Can’t push the Iranian government too hard for democratic reforms â€" they had cities when we were still living in caves.”"

Chinese news propaganda agency praises internet companies, people, and politicians in the West who are cracking down on free speech and "fake news" but bitches that they get criticized for doing this years before our news, companies, and governments have done so.

"In the meantime, the Western world won’t miss any opportunity to defame China over the issue, saying Beijing’s management over the Internet is strangling privacy and human rights."

The Chinese are showing a heavier hand in Australia lately - criticising everything our government does as though they're being oppressed, while actually oppressing the more independent Chinese diaspora here.

The Australian national broadcaster has also been airing more criticism of China following a long time of silence, just coincidentally after being kicked out of the Mainland and their sites blocked.

Also, a particularly idiotic decision by a state government sold our major northern port to a Chinese company with no consultation with the federal government , the military, or intelligence agencies. The port is used by the Australian and US navies, and Darwin is a reasonably major base for the USMC nowadays.

One has to laugh, but not a funny laugh, at the commentary by the Israeli. Weren't they working on some "stuff" with South Africa and a certain infamous doctor back in the day.....???

In event this is bad news considering Chinese proclivities, long-term goals, and animus towards other races.
